Bank of Beirut Chairman-CEO, Dr. Salim Sfeir hosted an Iftar in tribute to the media and press at the Four Seasons Hotel – Beirut, in the presence of MP Paula Yacoubian, Director of the National News Agency, Laure Sleiman, President of the Press Syndicate, Aouni Al-Kaaki, President of Editors’ Syndicate, Elias Aoun, and President of the Press Club Bassam Abu Zeid, alongside a distinguished gathering of media and banking figures.

In his opening note, Georges Aouad, Head of the Consumer Banking Division at Bank of Beirut, warmly welcomed the audience, underscoring the significance of this annual event that strengthens the bond between Bank of Beirut and its esteemed media partners.

Sfeir: During his comprehensive speech, Dr. Salim Sfeir, Bank of Beirut Chairman, emphasized the pressing need for radical reforms within the Association of Banks. He noted a positive step forward with the engagement of the prestigious international consultancy firm, McKinsey, tasked with conducting a thorough study and proposing viable solutions. Dr. Sfeir highlighted the importance of advancing good governance and implementing internal improvements within the Association. However, he expressed reservations about McKinsey’s recommendation to reform the electoral system of the Association’s Board, arguing that it could compromise democratic principles such as honest competition, equality, representation, and rotation. He vehemently opposed McKinsey's approach, asserting that it would favor one party over others and exclude fair opportunities.

Sfeir added, “I call upon my colleagues in the sector and the public to unite efforts in establishing an advanced electoral system for the Association of Banks—a system that upholds the core mission of fostering collaboration for the advancement of our banking sector. Only through positive and legitimate competition can we ensure progress and safeguard the public interest.”

Kaaki: Aouni Kaaki, President of the Press Syndicate, expressed profound gratitude to Dr. Sfeir for his generous initiative in annually honoring the media during Ramadan. He lauded Dr. Sfeir as "a national figure who plays a prominent role in Lebanese society, contributing significantly at human, financial, and economic levels.”

Aoun: Elias Aoun, President of the Editors’ Syndicate, also extended heartfelt thanks to Dr. Sfeir: “Your kind initiative towards the media family is highly appreciated and commands utmost respect, as do our dear journalists who illuminate society's paths even in the darkest circumstances, carrying the torch of freedom and development against all odds.”

Yacoubian: MP Paula Yacoubian delivered an impassioned speech, asserting that a free civil society hinges on a free economy, market, and commerce. She questioned the role and definition of civil society, posing critical inquiries: “Who defines civil society? Who frames it? Does civil society truly address the people's concerns? The concerns of the people are widespread, particularly among those grappling economically to ensure Lebanon's resilience. This poses a significant challenge for you, Dr. Sfeir, and the banking sector you represent.”

Dr. Sfeir then presented trophies to the honored individuals, symbolizing appreciation and recognition for their invaluable contributions to society and journalism.
