Salim Sfeir’s address upon receiving the Doctorate Honoris Causa Award in Business and Commercial Sciences from the University of the Holy Spirit (USEK) in May 2014

Your Beatitude Cardinal Mar Boutros El Rahi,

The Reverend Father Tannous Nehme,

The Reverend Father Doctor Hadi Mahfouz,

Honorable Fathers, Deans, Professors, Ladies and Gentlemen, and especially our beloved Students,

This is indeed one of the most memorable days of my life as I stand here today humbled with pride, honor and gratification.

I will not discuss today the economic conditions in our country, but would rather discuss the repercussions of continued emigration. For many decades development was measured first and foremost by economic indicators. I voice to you today that development is only through our youth; our young men and women who are indeed the wealth of this nation.

Yes, it may be true that our forefathers chose emigration.Today however, the world market forces have changed. As a matter of fact, unemployment abroad is high and consequently the opportunities and rewards of success are much greater in Lebanon than elsewhere.

I wish to remind you of the statement made famous by President Kennedy. "Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country."

And to you young people, Your Country needs you; it needs your vision, energy, and vitality.

Throughout my life I felt a commitment towards Lebanon. As a banker, I worked hard for many years, but from the very beginning I was determined to return to my homeland. The accomplishments I have personally achieved in banking were not a stroke of luck. They were molded by decisions and by determination from the very first day.

This Honoris Causa means a great deal to me. This Honoris Causa reflects the basis of a treasured relationship between Bank of Beirut and this esteemed University. I am deeply honored and hope I will remain up to your expectations.

Finally, a sincere thank you goes to my friends, to my family, to my life companions, and to my work companions who believed in my vision for Bank of Beirut.

To you all, I am grateful.

And a last word to the young generation, believe in yourselves and keep the good faith in Lebanon.

May God Bless you all,
